Our technology exploded during this evolutionary transition, with several apparent African ‘firsts’ and subsequent spreads of technology into Eurasia. We became human in Africa, and the African ‘firsts’ don’t stop with the initial spread of some Homo Sapiens into Eurasia.

“The Marsh is thrilled to announce the return of Geoff Hoyle’s hit solo show, Geezer.
From a hysterical riff on life in a nursing home to The Venerable Bede’s meditations on the meaning of life, from delightful reminiscences of his youth in England and young manhood in America to ruminations on aging and mortality, Hoyle brings his irrepressible sense of comedy and trademark physicality, as well as a certain elegiac wistfulness, to this tour-de-force performance about what it is like to grow old.
Geoff Hoyle trained with Marcel Marceau’s teacher, Etienne Decroux, in Paris, developing his unique physical bravura comic style, a combination of the court jester, vaudeville and English music hall. He made his mark in the Bay Area as the Pickle Family Circus’ beloved clown, Mr. Sniff. Later, he created the critically acclaimed Feast of Fools, featuring masked Commedia Dell’Arte characters including the libidinous and elderly Pantalone (Hoyle claims he will no longer need to use a mask for this one,) Il Dottore and the pratt-falling Arleccino. It is a depiction of Everyman striving for dignity in the face of a multitude of struggles, big and small, that is not unlike Hoyle’s own search for meaning in Geezer. His award-winning shows The Convict’s Return (about taking Feast of Fools to Broadway and its mixed reception there,) (Geni(us) and The First Hundred Years (an improbable history of comedy) have been seen in San Francisco, Paris, London, Berlin, Taiwan, New York, England and the former Soviet Union.
Regional theatre appearances include Berkeley and Seattle Repertory Theatres, A.C.T. and La Jolla Playhouse. He was the original Zazu in the Broadway cast of The Lion King and appeared off-Broadway in Bill Irwin’s Mr. Fox and in Tony Kushner’s and Maurice Sendak’s adaptation of the children’s opera Brundibar. His many film appearances include Popeye, during which his son, Dan, was born. Last summer, he performed his fabled three-legged dance in the oldest theatre in Italy, the Teatro della Pergola, built in Florence in 1656. Critics have remarked at the sheer joy Hoyle’s character finds in mastering his extra limb!”

We open the 2014 season with The Lion and the Fox, a prequel to Machiavelli’s The Prince, one of our most popular productions ever. This time we see Niccolo Machiavelli pair off against one of the greatest villains in history, Cesare Borgia. What really happened between the author of The Prince and the ideal subject of the little book that changed the world - Machiavelli’s infamous ‘handbook for tyrants’?
The more Machiavelli learns about Cesare, the more he is impressed. Borgia seems gifted beyond all others; he has limitless wealth, he’s a brilliant military tactician, a magnificent warrior, he’s irresistibly handsome, utterly ruthless - and incredibly lucky. He even has the great Leonardo da Vinci in his service, as the architect-engineer of his magnificent war machine, which seems increasingly unstoppable as it storms through Italy.
But when Machiavelli learns of a plot against the life of Cesare, he must make a choice: will he be loyal to the sacred homeland of his birth, the Republic of Florence? Barbara McKenna is a writer, communicator, and photographer. A few years ago she accepted the fact that she will never dunk a basketball. But she’s been watching, playing, and documenting basketball for 10 years and still thinks it’s the most incredible phenomenon on the planet.
Tim Phillips is an English sound artist, musician and inventor based in Oakland. His work looks at making people curious about sounds and rhythms, while using participation and collaboration to encourage interdisciplinary and unexpected outcomes.
Isabelle Jenniches is a digital media artist and Rydell Visual Arts Fellow whose work exploits the social and emotional impact of new forms of mediated communication like webcams and telepresence. Her current work - monumental composite images drawn from webcam stills - evolved from a fifteen-year fascination with live cameras on the Internet. You can see her work in the Rydell Visual Arts Fellowship exhibit here at MAH.
Jacob Martinez is a resident of Watsonville, community organizer, and a social entrepreneur. He designs and manages programs to increase the skills and confidence of Latinos to pursue careers in technology, increase parent engagement, community, and coalition building.
Rob Irion directs the Science Communication Program at UCSC. He’s been a science journalist for more than 25 years, focusing on astronomy, cosmology, physics, and earth sciences. His most recent stories have appeared in National Geographic, Science, Smithsonian, and Scientific American.
Emcee Sven Davis has hosted many local events and fundraisers and has been a regular contributor and performer with the Planet Cruz Comedy Hour with Richard Stockton. He was a regular humor columnist with the Santa Cruz Good Times, and has had a long and non-lucrative career in arts management. His long-running one-man show ‘my life’ is notable for having a one-man audience.
Lauren Shapiro is an artist and academic whose primary interest is in how art effects individual, interpersonal, and social change. Applying literary theory to the study of lifespan development, she explores how humor shared between friends fosters identity development, how stories shared between generations nurtures resilience, and how metaphors spoken between lovers predicts the course of romantic relationships.
Ian Everard is a copycat. He tries to copy, repeat or duplicate in pictures, words and actions the things he finds, the places he has been. He never seems to finish. He is not obsessed. He says again, he is not obsessed… You can see his work currently in the Rydell Visual Arts Fellowship exhibit here at MAH.
Paul House is a Santa Cruz artist who creates massive peace signs on local beaches.
PechaKucha comes from the Japanese term for the sound of ‘Chit Chat’. Originating from Tokyo, this innovative presentation format is a fast-paced, visual, and fun.

Book of Honor: The City and The City by China Mieville
Potlatch is a small, literary speculative fiction convention. It was started in Seattle and alternates between Seattle, the San Francisco Bay Area, and sometimes Portland.
Potlatch contributes to the future of speculative fiction with an auction benefiting the Clarion West Scholarship Fund. Clarion West is an intense six-week workshop for speculative fiction writers at the start of their careers. When you buy books, art, and unique hand-made items in the auction, you are helping students who otherwise could not attend Clarion West. Students who may become your favorite new writers.
Potlatch is a place where readers and writers meet on common ground. Everyone at Potlatch, whether reader or writer or artist or editor, is a fan. Potlatch’s format, with a single track of programming, brings everyone together in a lively discussion that continues from one program to the next and goes on into the evening. Potlatch has some of the most interesting conversations - and people - in the science fiction community.
The first Potlatch committee in Seattle decided that Potlatch would not have a Guest of Honor. For Potlatch 2, the Bay Area committee added the idea of a Book of Honor. It has worked very well. The book is not put on a pedestal as may happen with an honored guest. The discussion includes the flaws of the book as well as its virtues, and it is always thoughtful and insightful. For Potlatch 23 we tried something new: The members, instead of the committee, chose the Book of Honor. The City and The City by China Mieville is an excellent book, fascinating to read, and worth talking about.

Potlatch 23 will be at the elegant Sainte Claire Hotel in San Jose, California. The Sainte Claire is on the National Register of Historic Places, and it is by far the most beautiful hotel in the area. It is in the heart of downtown San Jose, on the light rail line. There are excellent restaurants and cafes nearby, including the Il Fornaio restaurant in the hotel.”

"Ye Gaskell Occasional Dance Society has been sponsoring Victorian Ballroom dances for over 20 years. We currently sponsor 6 balls a year at the Scottish Rite Temple in Oakland.
We have live music played by the Brassworks of San Francisco, a group of 5 brass horns and a drummer led by Frank Davis. The dances feature Victorian Waltzes, Polkas, Schottisches, Mazurkas, and set dances such as the Sir Roger de Coverley and the Congress of Vienna.
The general format of the dance is three 40 minute and one 30 minute sessions of live music, with three 20 minute breaks. We also occasionally have other entertainment during the breaks such as Morris dancing. The first set starts at 8:30 PM, with the last set ending at Midnight. Starting at 7:45 PM is a dance workshop where members of the Society quickly cover the basics of waltzing, polkas and the schottische.
Of course, the usual 19th, 20th and 21st century formal wear is always welcome.

The Urban Form of Samarkand’s Mahallas

“Pursuing both a personal and academic interest in Central Asia, Ms. Krugmeier secured a research grant in 2010 to study the vernacular urban form of residential districts in the ancient Silk Road city of Samarkand, Uzbekistan. These districts, called mahallas, are characterized by densely-built courtyard homes organized in an organic honeycomb along networks of narrow streets and blind alleys. UNESCO recognizes Samarkand as a World Heritage Site and graciously sponsored her study visa for field work in 2012 (although she has no official connection to the organization).
The four-part, in-progress study involves mapping several of Samarkand's mahallas and identifies the unique characteristics of their urban form. Part I comprises a brief primer on urban form typologies to provide a framework within which Samarkand’s structure can be presented. Part II outlines the Post-Timurid history of the city plan. Part III illustrates the fundamental elements of mahallas: the pond, water channels, mosque, teahouse and homes. Part IV presents maps and drawings showing the intricate mahalla street network. Cultural and social norms fundamental to the formation of urban fabric will also be explored.
Why Samarkand? Ms. Krugmeier’s fascination with the unique fingerprint of cities was piqued in 1995 during an overland journey along 3,000 miles of the Silk Route from East Turkestan (the Uyghur region of China) to Ashgabat, Turkmenistan. She found the mahallas to be of equal interest to the grand architectural monuments of the region, but unlike the latter, literature on the residential districts was virtually non-existent in the West. Moreover, the systematic destruction of these ‘substandard’ living quarters by unsympathetic political entities underscores the urgency of documentation. When the opportunity arose to secure a research grant from the Professor Halasz Trust (a former professor of Architecture at M.I.T.), she crafted a project to return to Uzbekistan to realize this aspiration.
Born and raised in the greater Los Angeles area, Ms. Krugmeier studied Architecture at UC Berkeley. Following her undergraduate degree and two years’ practice, she attended the M.I.T. School of Architecture and Planning earning a Master of Architecture in 1980. At M.I.T. she developed an interest in the relationship between buildings and urban form, an essential theme of her career. After practicing in Cambridge and San Francisco, she joined her current firm, BAR Architects in 1990, becoming a Principal in 1997. Supplementary to her architectural practice designing urban, mixed-use developments, she has undertaken a research project exploring the urban form of vernacular neighborhoods in Samarkand. Plans to scale back practice coincide with the completion of the research publication in 2015. Ms Krugmeier is proficient in Italian and has a second home in Milan, Italy, the city of her husband and his extended family.”

“She formed Herself of clay… the clay of the banks of the Euphrates River and the Mediterranean Sea. Glorious and expedient, Sha'taqat, the Syrian Goddess of Health and Healing is strong in magick. Her name means ‘She who drives away’ referring to Her power to drive out illness. With Her strong wings, She flies over the land in search of medicinal herbs for traditional medicines. With nature's pharmacy and Her healing hands, she cures our bodies.
Thousands of years ago, Sha'taqat was asked to cure Keret, the king of Hubur, of a mysterious disease. She flew over hundreds of cities and towns in search of the medicine that would make him well. When She found it and had cured the king, word of Her victory over death spread throughout the kingdom. She is remembered in ancient texts as a healer and a Goddess of miracles.
As we sit with Sha'taqat over the next few days please examine your own physiology and a specific physical ailment that you would like to ask Sha'taqat to help you heal. If you aren't in any obvious physical pain, let your psychic self read your body and see where there may be dis-ease that is as of yet invisible. View this with an open heart and mind, letting fear leave you! You will be healed, Sha'taqat will lead us and the Capricorn Moon will lend strong support in our healing work, bringing Her no-nonsense approach to Sha'taqat's altar.
For the altar, please bring a gold or yellow candle (decorated for your own physical health if you are so called), any wings or images of wings that wish to be present, and any magical body healing tools that you would like to charge up on the altar.
Also, please bring a tithe in denominations of five dollars wrapped in a gold or yellow ribbon for the Syrian Sunrise Foundation, which is dedicated to helping Syrian refugees and orphans to have shoes, clothing, food, and shelter during the civil war in their country. May our contributions bring mercy to Her people who are suffering immeasurably.
Finally, please bring fresh herbs and flowers to this altar as we will be redecorating Danielle's Temple Priestess broom!

Please bring a snack to share (if possible, food of the culture we are celebrating), washable eating utensils (bowl, cup, plate, utensils, etc. In honor of Mother Earth, we do not provide disposable items), a candle (for safety reasons, we highly recommend a candle in a glass container, often called a novena), and pillow or chair to sit on to all rituals. “In an effort to increase the safety of our community, Radiance is sponsoring a three-hour Introduction to Self-Defense Workshop taught by Impact Bay Area.
This workshop introduces participants to the basics of self-defense. The class covers street safety and awareness, physical and verbal boundary setting and some basic full-force self-defense tactics proven effective at keeping you safer in the world. Class size is limited, and students have opportunities to practice front and rear grab responses and effective ground fighting with a padded mock assailant.
Open to all genders, age 18 and over.
